Sam was born with compound disabilities: he suffers from autism as well as down syndrome.  His physical and mental disabilities weigh heavily  on every member of his family.  Ewan learned to cope with the challenge early on, and it made him precocious. As a teenager, he has plans to become a scientist and prepares himself to be a life-long caretaker.  Sam&#8217;s conditions also brought about a reversal of the usual parent-children situation.
